Have you ever watched a professional sporting event and seen athletes with bright tape on their shoulders or lower backs? This brightly covered tape is called Kinesio Tape and it is used to deal with a wide variety of injuries and conditions. At Reza Chiropractic we use it with both our chiropractic patients as well as the clients we train. People often have questions about how Kinesio Tape can help them as well as how it works.

Traditional Vs Kinesiology Taping

Kinesiology Taping (KT)

This gives patient the ability to freely move the joint without being restricted by the tape. This lightweight tape is put directly on the patient’s skin and can be worn for several days until it begins to peel off. This is particularly beneficial for athletes and chiropractic patients because it can withstand sweat and water.

The breathable tape allows for moisture and fresh air to circulate to and from the skin. Scores of tiny holes as well as stiffer ridges that line the tape promote air flow as well as provide a “lift” to make the tape feel lighter. KT can be worn for several days and withstands regularly showering which makes it a more appealing option to patients.

Traditional Taping

This is used to stabilize the joint by decreasing movement. The tape would restrict the athlete’s range of motion as well as decrease circulation to the area. Restriction of movement combined with poor ventilation and frequent changes make this tape a less desirable option.

How does Kinesio Tape work?

Kinesio Tape works by either activating or inhibiting a certain muscle. The direction the tape is applied creates tension that affects the surrounding tissues and nervous system. This can either reduce inflammation to the area or increase circulation which helps filter out inflammatory by-products. Kinesiology Taping combined with chiropractic adjustments allows patients to heal faster.
